Touki
Yusuf’s style and visual language are based on a profound reflection on the irresponsible behavior of people and manufacturers who ignore the principles of material reuse; it is precisely from these “souls” - as he calls discarded objects - that he consciously selects colors and shapes to create three-dimensional, visually compelling compositions: images, reliefs, and decorative elements that rhetorically challenge our careless attitude toward waste disposal. But above all, his paintings constitute an archive dedicated to Yoruba culture and Nigerian heritage.
Continuing the narrative that runs through Yusuf’s entire body of work, the exhibition is centered on masks and sculptures from the collection of M’bolo Aouasso (Ivory Coast). He was joined in the exhibition by UNESCO Artist Twins Seven Seven (1944-2011).
Thus, the dialogue between ritual tradition and individual expression revealed new facets of African art, set the tone for the first exhibition, and underscored the gallery’s philosophy.
